Air quality testing for radon, with a record you can read
Radon changes with wind, weather, furnace use and open windows. A monitor shows you the pattern.
Odd or mixed results
Two kits gave two numbers? A monitor shows the full pattern and helps you decide.
Finished basements
Check a living space after you remodel. The EPA says to test before and after finishing a basement.
After a fix
See how your system performs through a full test, then repeat every couple of years.
Real estate tests
The EPA lists a 48-hour continuous monitor as a short-term option in a sale (EPA guide).
How continuous radon monitoring works
- We place the monitor. It goes in the lowest level you use, away from vents and outside walls.
- You keep closed-house conditions. Windows and outside doors stay shut during the test, apart from normal use.
- It records. The monitor logs readings through at least 48 hours.
- We read the data. We look at the average and the pattern, and compare them with the 4.0 pCi/L action level.
- You get a report. The report explains what the numbers mean and what to do next.

Monitor, kit or long-term test?
| Method | Best when | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Continuous monitor | You want a pattern, or you are in a sale | Needs 48 hours, closed house |
| Short-term kit | You want a quick first answer | One number only |
| Long-term test | You want the year-round average | Takes over 90 days |
Industry practice, as the EPA notes, suggests retesting a home that is under the action level about every five years (EPA analysis). If your monitor shows a high number, see radon mitigation system installation. For standard tests, see radon testing and inspection. Go back to the home page.
Questions people ask us
What is a continuous radon monitor?
It is an electronic device that records radon throughout the test, instead of giving you one number at the end.
How long should a continuous monitor run?
The EPA says to test with a continuous monitor for at least 48 hours, and to fix the home if the average radon level is 4 pCi/L or more (EPA guide).
Can a monitor tell if someone moved it?
Active devices may have features that help prevent or detect test interference, as the EPA explains for real estate tests.
Do you test for mold or other air problems?
No. Our air quality testing for radon covers radon only. Mold and chemical testing need other specialists.
Should I retest after I fix my home?
Yes. The EPA suggests retesting at least every two years after a fix (EPA).
